The Aeolian Islands, north of the Sicilian coast, in the province of Messina, in year 2000 was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Seven islands of volcanic soil in some of which there is still a fair amount of volcanic activity. The largest island is Lipari, followed by Salina. The smallest, Panarea, is also the most exclusive island, preferred by VIPs.
Stromboli, thanks to the intense activity of so called volcano “Iddu”, has seen tourism increase significantly in recent years. Vulcano remains a very popular island both for the natural mud pool and for tourist attractions. Finally, Filicudi and Alicudi, west of the archipelago and close to Palermo, are the islands for lovers of nature and quiet. No vehicles circulate in Alicudi and it is characterized by a wild and unspoiled area, ideal for a perfect Sicilian mix of beach holidays and trekking.
